![]() ![]() It also featured a young Natalie Wood as Susan Walker, the daughter of one of the principal characters. Edmund Gwenn, who played Kris Kringle in that movie, won an Academy Award for best supporting actor. Also, this production was a musical, and the 1947 “Miracle on 34th Street” movie I’m familiar with isn’t. I didn’t know quite what to expect since the Fireside is a theater in the round. ![]() ![]() I do enjoy the occasional high school play and we have seen several Highland musicals in the past few years that I would describe as “captivating.” However, this was our first trip to the Fireside. We attended the holiday dinner theater at Cannova’s last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. That’s when we joined a bus trip to the Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, - about 90 miles away - to see their dinner theater production of “Miracle on 34th Street.” My wife and I had our own encounter with Santa last month. Maybe he stops here so often because it’s been a lot warmer than up north. Maybe he has a lot of elves and brownies helping him. I’m also impressed that he can make so many public appearances and can still get all his work done at the North Pole, but then that’s why he’s Santa Claus. One of the places he’s visited is the Freeport Public Library. He has been coming to town - asking good little boys and girls what they want for Christmas. ![]() Now that’s an easy request to meet! Maybe she still had visions of Halloween still dancing in her head.Īnd speaking of easy, it’s pretty easy to bump into Santa this time of year. Maybe he could have been giving out Halloween candy since that holiday was a lot closer than Christmas.Īnd when it comes to candy, our two-year-old granddaughter recently told us over the phone what she wants for Christmas. I think he would have been wearing shorts. I almost expected to bump into Santa in that section of the store. Okay, there are no Halloween or Thanksgiving trees but when they appear that early, they should be. At first I was hoping they were Halloween trees or maybe Thanksgiving trees but no, they were Christmas trees. I know Christmas shopping comes earlier and earlier because my wife and I were walking through a Freeport store in September when we saw it: a display of fully lit artificial Christmas trees for sale. ![]()

![]() :)Ī neat way I have-go to a music library and read down the shelves at things you have not played-the neater ones to find and learn/figure out are things you have not heard of. Sue PS I'm teaching at Ithaca's ASTA camp this summer. Suzuki's choices, like the many printed fingerings, were in good part about involving parents, not intended as crutches for kids to avoid ever learning to read, for instance. But I have some questions about using Suzuki books as "tune books", especially if exclusively, without other key Suzuki method/ philosophy components. ![]() ![]() I am Suzuki-trained myself with many years in a school-modified Suzuki setting, and now teach privately. By comparison, someone who teaches a strict Suzuki regimen IS teaching a set course of study. I have heard of people who only teach pieces from the manual, and who are also so misguided as to begin next year's piece the month after this year's Festival, but I will never agree with that as an instructional choice. The list of pieces isn't an outline or course of study by any definition. Though someone with little string pedagogy could do worse than to build a curriculum that includes everything in a particular level. I don't know anyone who thinks that's it as far as level-whatever skills, thus those items are not an outline, per se. But it isn't quite correct to label it a syllabus, which my dictionary defines as "a summary outline, course of study or examination requirements." Those of us using the manual understand that the scales and sight-reading chart are to put some parameters on what will be tested at each level during a once-a-year Solo Festival presentation. Hi,Marc,You are certainly entitled to come to your own opinion about the NYSSMA manual. The loss in having these standard rep lists that everyone follows-is not only in music ceasing to get published anymore (If anyone knows where I could pick up the other 20 some-odd Viottis, I´d be grateful)-but in students who lose out in terms of variety and individuality and who constantly end up comparing themselves to one another on the sole ground of what piece they are playing.įind a (great) music library and start walking going down the shelves and perusing things you are unfamiliar with-and it becomes terribly apparent quite rapidly how much is left out of most teacher/associations rep lists. Of course the above is only the top snowflake of the mountain of repertoire that goes mostly untouched because it doesn get listed in syllabi. Heck, what Vivaldi concerti do people regularly know that is not either the infamous A or G minor(s) or in the 4 seasons? I mean the man only wrote what 600 some others in his life? Most of those were even aimed at sudents-bingo good student rep composed as such, all under one name. People seldom play Locatelli caprices-I´ve never heard one played.I once had a recording with some of them peppered around sonatas.where is that. Or heck, just the other movements of the Seitz Student Concerti that didn´t happen not to be favs of Suzuki-and therefore not in NYSSMA? Or the 19 Caprices that Kreutzer did seperately other than the 42 etudes we all know and love? ![]() Or the other Spohr concerti? (I recently was lucky and found a collected recording of all of them) Who knows any of the other 20 some odd Viotti Concerti? The main gripe I have with any repertoire syllabus-is that there is so much music out there-that gets past-over since it is not listed in some persons quick list of good pieces-as a result a great deal of music falls out of print. The NYSSMA syllabus I don´t personally like-I´ve seen more than a few NY teachers go out and abuse the Suzuki books as tune-books after getting inspiration from it-since the Suzuki books end up having a good share of the rep in the NYSSMA book already in sequence. It really depends on the history of the country and the teacher though of course as to what you´ll see. The main syllabi I´ve seen internationally is the Royal Academy of Music syllabus. Everyone has a different opinion as to what steps should be taken to get from point A to point B. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Carvey discussed the script under the title Hans and Franz: The Girlyman Dilemma during a 2016 interview with Howard Stern. In a 2010 interview on Conan, Nealon and host Conan O'Brien discussed being holed up in a Santa Monica hotel room for a month with Carvey and Robert Smigel working on the script for what was then intended to be a musical. Starting in the early 1990s, a Hans and Franz film was in development, with the working title Hans and Franz Go to Hollywood. In 2014, the duo appeared in several State Farm commercials with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In the sketch, Hans and Franz tell the story of how they were reunited in Hollywood when Franz unsuspectingly had his buttocks "read" by Hans. It appeared in a later episode that season. Franz also considered the Weekend Update sketches were not good since they replaced the past anchor (also played by Kevin Nealon).Ī short sketch was filmed for the show's 1999 primetime 25th Anniversary Special which spoofed VH1's Behind the Music specials, but time constraints prevented it from airing. However, a 1994 episode where Carvey hosted had Hans and Franz appearing as guest commentators as Weekend Update, with the pair mentioning they took some time off and were dismayed at the show's crew for dismantling their set. The first sketch in which the characters appear occurred during the season premiere of the 13th season.Īfter Carvey left the show, the sketch was retired. ![]() The idea for the characters of Hans and Franz came in 1987 in a Des Moines, Iowa, hotel room while Nealon was watching an Arnold Schwarzenegger television interview during Nealon's and Carvey's first comedy tour. Rather than hand out high sugar candy, Hans and Franz gave "treats" of Vitamin C pills, coconut oil, and bee pollen to encourage kids to stay in shape. The two compared how their Terminators were tougher, then derided other "girlie" costumes, even a boy who was Superman. Hans and Franz both dressed up as their idol, Arnold Schwarzengger, specifically Franz as the T-800 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Hans as the titular character from the first film. One sketch that did not have the pair in their signature sweatsuits and leather belts was a Halloween episode. Another sketch was done in response to recent sports news, where a " Saturday Night Live editorial" showed Hans and Franz barking back at a recent remark by Jimmy the Greek that African men were more apt to be muscular than European men. Schwarzenegger made one guest appearance in the sketch (to much applause) in which he ridicules "his cousins" for being "girlie" and weak. "Pumping Up" primarily consists of Hans and Franz denigrating others for not being strong and as physically fit as they appear to be, striking bodybuilder poses to show off their "muscled" bodies, complete with strained facial expressions. The sketch's introductory and ending music featured mock Austrian yodeling. The background of the set includes several life-sized cutouts of Schwarzenegger during his competition years. In the sketch, Carvey and Nealon play a pair of muscle-bound Austrian bodybuilders in the mold of Arnold Schwarzenegger, using padding for fake muscles, drab gray sweatsuits, weight belts, and speaking with Austrian accents. Hans and Franz are characters in a recurring sketch called " Pumping Up with Hans & Franz" on the television sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, played by Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon, respectively. ![]() ![]() This adds a dash of roguelike synergy as you stack them to create powerful combos. As characters defeat enemies they level up, letting you choose from a set of randomly selected class abilities. This makes it easier for newly rolled characters to enter the game, but also adds an element of expendability as with old school renaissance tabletop RPGs. The character creation system is also appealingly simple: you either roll a random character or choose three defining hooks and a class. It’s a great little feature that complements Wildermyth’s emergent character stories, letting you hold on to your personal favourites. ![]() There are multiple ways to make a Legacy character: keep them alive until retirement, build a monument if they die, or choose them as your Legacy hero when the campaign finishes. Overall, Dredge is a super fun and unique game that gets it mostly right across the board. On top of the five set narrative campaigns in Wildermyth, you can also play randomly generated campaigns or Legacy campaigns that allow you to use your favourite heroes from those you’ve previously completed. There is some downloadable content (DLC) called Blackstone Key, however. Dredge is a stellar experience, but know the fun will be over within 8 or 9 hours, and there is very little replayability as there is no multiplayer or map editor. This is especially impressive for an indie title, where production values are often much lower than AAA games due to a lack of budget. But the graphics and music are both top-notch, so kudos to Black Salt Games for creating an immersive experience that looks and sounds - nay, feels - great. The system used to fish could have been more realistic and/or more engaging - it's like a rhythm game where you must click or button-press at the right time. ![]() It's also fun to outfit and upgrade your ship and gear with special equipment to gain access to rarer catches. If you can pardon the pun, the real hook for this fishing simulation is the dark story, deep secrets, and rich atmosphere, all tied to the characters, neighboring islands, and ominous creatures you may encounter among the 125 or so deep sea denizens within the game (and collectible artifacts, too). While not perfect, as it's a relatively short experience and the actual act of "fishing" is oddly tied to timed clicks or button presses on a disc, Dredge is a worthy, solitary adventure. Without giving away too much, the tasks you perform for the mysterious people in this village, and the tales you'll hear throughout, is what will keep you glued to this game for a few hours. However, Dredge proves an engaging story can also be told while catching and selling fish. ![]() OK, so a video game about virtual fishing may not sound too exciting - though titles like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and Red Dead Redemption 2 make it fun as a minigame. Note: Available for multiple platforms - PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC - Dredge looks and plays the same between them all, but with higher graphical fidelity on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. All the while, you must keep an eye on the time, and watch out for darkness and fog, which will impede your success. After all, there must bee a reason you are repeatedly warned to leave and forget this place. Throughout this single-player game, you'll take on various quests for the locals, explore new locations, face off against all kinds of fish (and more malicious sea creatures), explore the ocean for artifacts, upgrade your boat and gear, and unravel a dark mystery. If you damage the ship, such as bang into rocks and bust up the hull, you'll need to pay for repairs, too. You inquire about work and set sail in a small boat to look for fish to catch and sell. ![]() Weaving in adventure game elements, such as an inventory and characters to interact with (such as a Fishmonger, Mayor, and Shipwright), you awaken in a small fishing village after your ship is damaged. Developed by New Zealand's Black Salt Games and published by Team 17, DREDGE can best be described as a story-based fishing simulation. ![]() ![]() ![]() You should also add the wildflower bloom during the spring with hairy desert sunflower and native penstemon species.
